A healthy lifestyle consists of holding beliefs and engaging in activities that create better health for you in regards to social relations, consumption, entertainment, and other activities or habits.

The behaviors and practices within lifestyles are a mixture of habits, conventional ways of doing things, and reasoned actions which generally reflects an individual's attitudes, values, or world view.

For example, a "green lifestyle" means holding beliefs and engaging in activities that consume fewer resources and produce less harmful waste (i.e. a smaller carbon footprint), and deriving a sense of self from holding these beliefs and engaging in these activities.

The lifestyle, activities, and beliefs you choose are directly reflected in your quality of health and wellness. If you want health you need to hold on to beliefs and engage in activities that promote health and disregard those that tear down.

Living a healthy lifestyle might or might not increase your maximum or average lifespan, but it certainly can increase your quality of life.

Average lifespan is determined by vulnerability to accidents and age-related afflictions such as cancer or cardiovascular disease.

Extension of average lifespan and a "better" quality of life can be achieved by good diet, exercise, a good night's sleep and avoidance of hazards such as smoking or other tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, drug abuse, and excess eating of sugar-containing foods.

Currently, the maximum life span known for humans is 122.5 years and today the average lifespan for an American Male is 73.6 years and 79.4 years for women. Note: Life expectancy is lower for African Americans; 67.2 years for men and 74.7 years for women.

Achieving health and remaining healthy is an active process and some effective strategies for a healthy lifestyle include the following elements:

  • Nutrition: the science that studies how what people eat affects their health and performance, such as foods or food components that cause diseases or deteriorate health (such as eating too many calories, which is a major contributing factor to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
  • Exercise: the performance of movements in order to develop or maintain physical fitness and overall health.
  • Hygiene: the practice of keeping the body clean to prevent infection and illness, and the avoidance of contact with infectious agents.
  • Stress management: the application of methods to either reduce stress or increase tolerance to stress such as, relaxation techniques, exercise, positive thinking, meditation, and recreation.
  • Health care: the prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well being through the services offered by the medical, nursing, and allied health professions.
